It’s not often that cover versions of songs actually excite me, let alone creep their way up my Top 25 Most Played on iTunes – but this one is different. Breed 77 have recently released their politically-tinged LP Insects which includes as the last track a cover of Zombie by The Cranberries.
When I interviewed vocalist Paul Isola for Twisted magazine, he said he chose the song for “its simple structure and well crafted songmanship”. Which it is, there’s nothing overly complicated about the song which is what makes it accessible for even non-Breed 77 fans. Yes there’s a definite metal edge to it, but it’s not so heavy that your ears will bleed or so filled with screams you’d think you’d stumbled onto the set Saw 17.
Here’s the track itself, leave a comment if you think it was worth bringing up as a good cover.
